2 Litre Diesel Starting Problems
Hi all
My 02 diesel tourer, owned for over 10 years, is now playing up a little. car starts first time in the morning/evening. Turns over for 30 to 60 seconds and sometimes longer before starting when it's hot. Also started cutting out mid journey...3 times in 2 days, all on the very busy M42. Coasted to a halt in a safety refuge, then it started up again. Now, I have always used Austin garage in tatenhill, but last month I called twice, no answer. Left two messages. No call back. Does anyone know what's going on up there? So I took it somewhere else...backstreet place where you don't get any paperwork. Put it on T4 and told me it was fuel sensors? had them replaced, and fuel filter. Cutting out has been cured, taking an age to start when engine is hot has NOT. So, anyone have experience of this? And does anyone know of a reliable Rover mechanic in the Birmingham area? Cheers in advance.

Ron, you are describing the classic symptoms of injector leakback, I can't help you with a local repairer apart from recommending Terry at TS Autos.......he's moved from Stourbridge to somewhere near Ludlow IIRC

See if you can make our Nano meet the weekend 22nd /23rd there will be a T4 present & also a leak back test kit on the Saturday, we could have a quick look over it to see if the problem highlights it's self http://www.midlandsnanomeets.co.uk/meets_2014.html http://www.midlandsnanomeets.co.uk/venues.html

An update on this problem (now solved) at great expense.
Firstly as I couldn't get in touch with Austin garage I went to the next nearest "Rover Specialist" - SAS, Coventry Road Birmingham. Had the car 10 days, charged £200, two days later it was still not working right. Rather than throw more money at someone inept I tried MetroMan on Warwick Road Birmingham. This guy talked the talk but was a total charlatan. Charged me £300 in all and that included an injector leak-back test that he obviously didn't carry out. Avoid both at ALL COSTS especially MetroMan. Finally got hold of Nick at Austin garage and he located the problem in 15 minutes - injector 3 leaking. Another £400 but at least the car is working now. You may ask why I didn't take my car back to either of these clowns. Simple answer, I didn't fancy getting arrested for GBH. Lesson learnt, stick with who you know (even if Nick DOES make it very difficult to get a hold of him)

And for what it's worth, I consider £400 to diagnose and replace one injector slightly on the pricey side too, so based on that I would have headed to see Terry at TS Autos over in Ludlow Brian |

As already stated above, Nano meet injector would have been located as the problem, removed refitted at the cost of a good used one from Mickyboy or anyone else you could have got one from.
They can also sometimes be carried by crew members so would most likely have cost you in the region of £45.00 the most. If you could not have made the meet then as above terry is not far from Brum, neither am I you would also have had a free T4 health check at the meet most likely at Terrys also, most surely at mine. A quick reminder to local midland owners you are welcome to our meets please come & enjoy the free knowledge sharing and get your car a good looking over.
