Not torquing or over torqued wheel bolts is a huge no no at work. We are randomly checked and quality controlled by a member of staff internally and also by an external company with financial implications if incorrect.

My torque wrench is digital and you can watch the reading rise so you don’t over torque. When getting to the correct torque it beeps and vibrates through the handle. If you set it to a high reading then apply minimum pressure it shows the current torque without tightening or loosening. It was around £600 though

The outside company that quality controls our work on behalf of a manufacturer used to check wheel torques by putting a mark on the stud/nut and wheel, then loosened and tightened until the marks lined back up. Improvements in tools now mean it’s an easier job. My torque wrenches get calibrated every 2 years but they get a lot of use. I have the 1/2” and 3/8 versions by SnapOn which also do degrees as well as NM and lb/ft but are scarily expensive at around £1000 for the pair. The degrees option is brilliant, if you set it to 180 and get to 126 and need to stop as your arms are crossed it will then know you still have 54 degrees to go. Invaluable to have accurate kit in the professional sector as sump plugs, spark plugs etc all get torqued.

Seems as though torque wrenches have ‘grown up’ a bit since I was at work.

That Snap-on wrench sounds like an impressive tool.
I recently rebuilt the PG1 gearbox on my MGF and had a tough time torquing the main shaft securing nut. With the shaft clamped vertically in the vise it was all I could do to torque it up to 80ftlbs while trying not to pull the free-standing bench over. I couldn't get the torque wrench to click for the life of me. As I was going to the machine shop anyway I asked them to double check the torque, which was apparently correct. Seems that with the nut at about eye level I had the wrench at a bit of an angle and the "clicker" wouldn't click.

Here's a question for the experts...How would the application of Loctite to a thread affect the torque value? would it make about the same variance as copa-slip?

Yes, liquid anaerobic adhesives such as Loctite 243 affect torque in a similar way to Coppaslip, i.e. you should apply a reduction of 20% as a rough rule of thumb to achieve the desired figure.

Patchlok bolts as per original fitment is a semisolid anaerobic preapplied to the bolt thread, and as a semisolid can be treated as a dry fastener as far as torque is concerned.

Default wheel bolts mk2

fascinating discussion chaps, going back to basics tho, how do you remove seized ones? 3 of the 4 wheels removed easily mainly due to copious amounts of copperslip applied to faces and threads, however 1 wheel missed out and bolts threatening to round off using wheelbrace. would a socket be better after drenching in plus gas and if so what size please. many thanks .

Mine are 19mm socket size, I assume that is standard. Make sure you use a six sided socket though if it is that tight (one that acts on the flats of the bolt rather than the corners).

Default wheel bolts mk2

I was able to borrow a set of sockets from a friend. they are bi hex though so will try and get the proper jobs. not easy getting anything these days though, nearly everywhere closed inc my go to mechanic. seem to spend half my life trawling food websites so will just have to spend the other half looking for "proper tools " wondering if its possible to acquire small dia scaffold pole to extend the socket wrench, lol.

Don't use a bi-hex, as you'll round it off in no time.
Use a proper hex socket, ideally with a relatively thick wall - my impact sockets just about fit in the wheel bolt recess, and there's nothing that'll snap those.
