Just to put things into perspective that would still work out cheaper for me than ECP's price at £13.31

Thanks again Steve

If I might come back in on this,

When I wrote the original txt, I had spoken to Engineering Carbon Products the previous day.

They confirmed that they would now supply either 3 or 4 brushes per order, and I put that into the original text (message # 1)

I confess that I didn't pay any attention to postal costs.

However, further to the photographs of burnt out 2 speed fans, and the subsequent comments, I am no longer clear as to whether they (early 2 speed) are 3 brushes :-
wired as (1) speed 1, (2) speed 2, and (3) common (12v supply or earth return?)

or 4 brushes :-
Wired as (1) a speed, (2 & 3) the other speed, and (4) common.

Regards

I have just re-read the correspondence regarding burnt out fans, and realize that it is in fact quite clear, the 2 speed fans use 4 brushes, with two of them "doubled up".

All fan motors that I've seen use four brushes, most unlikely that you'll need more than two brushes.

Yes Mike, this was news to me too until Steve (Arctic) sent me a board from a 2 speed 3 wire system. On this the positive supply has two brushes wired in parallel and one earth brush for the slow speed. The fourth brush is used as an additional earth to produce the fast speed.

I have never inspected a board from a 2 speed 2 wire system but I'm assured that this design uses a pair of brushes wired in parallel both on the positive supply and the earth. The speed reduction is, of course, achieved by switching in the resistor.
