Or the water pump has failed which leads to catastrophic coolant dump.

Well, I guess if the garage didn't find anything, that probably means you don't have a burst coolant hose. Looks more like water pump now. I've heard of the water pump impeller breaking loose from the shaft (then it doesn't rotate to pump water), but can't see how that could happen and then let you drive to the garage and troubleshoot only to fail again on the way home.

Around £300 if they just change the pump, £450 - £550 if you need the belts doing at the same time.
