Default RON 95 or RON 98

Just been re-reading my rover 75 V6 Auto Conn SE owners hand book, under fuel system it quotes Type of fuel “95 RON” unleaded petrol to EN 228 specification.
A little further down the page it states “for optimum engine performance, 98 RON unleaded petrol should be used”.
Have any member ever tried a comparison test with these two grades i.e. performance, MPG, Etc, is it worth the extra expense

It's only a lump of metal that gets you from A to B but boy what a lump

I've tried all sorts of super fuels and I know members on the forum have mixed feelings on this but personally I don't really feel any difference between the two fuels and most super fuels are now over 98RON anyway, I do use is good brands of fuel, I do notice quite a difference using Tesco fuel to using Shell regular fuel, Shell gives me more performance and better MPG and has a better additive pack in the fuel, I always use Shell where I can but don't get me wrong if my gauge was hovering on empty and I was passing Tesco I will fuel my V6 from there and I sure there nothing wrong with the fuel its down to personal preference.

I use 98 nowadays, the engine gets better torque and uses (slightly) less fuel. You don't notice after only one tank though, but fill it uo a couple of times...

AFAIK the ECU knock sensor ignition timing adjustment for the 2.5 doesn't advance it any further than for 95RON.

All I've noticed with using 98RON is that the engine seems slightly noisier on idle. Could be my imagination of course though.

Unfortunately I won't fit down the filler pipe!

Steve

It will advance up to 98 RON.

Look at the technical data in your handbook, in my book it is on page 192-193

Knock sensors don't advance the ignition, they only retard it in the event knock is detected.

My preference is Shell Vee-power and Tesco 99. You are more likely to notice the loss in the performance rather than the gain. Also, if you don't go much above 4000rpm before changing gear normally then go with a quality 95, in my experience. I like the super because I have a heavy right foot with a tendency to enjoy the howl all the way through to the redline - and I accept that I probably pay for the enjoyment in the higher fuel cost.

Don't forget the extra addictive pack you get with the super fuels.
