'Exploding' iPhones prompt safety investigation
'Exploding' iPhones prompt safety investigation
3 hours 4 mins ago The EU's safety watchdogs are investigating reports that Apple iPods and iPhones are "exploding" in the summer weather. 'Exploding' iPhones prompt safety investigation The investigation follows reports from Britain, France, Holland and Sweden that some digital music players and mobile phones have spontaneously combusted in the sunshine. One French teenager claims to have been injured when his girlfriend's iPhone apparently exploded into pieces after starting to "crackle and pop". The European Commission has asked Apple to share any relevant information and the company is carrying out a full investigation. 200 million iPods and 26 million iPhones have been sold in Europe and Apple claims to have ruled out any widespread safety problem. An Apple spokesman said: "We are aware of these reports and we are waiting to receive the units from the customers. Until we have the full details, we don't have anything further to add." |

From what I've gathered from around the internet is that it's often phones/ipods that have been enclosed in restrictive covers/cases that have become too hot. The recommended advise was to remove the phone/ipod from the case when using it for extended periods (especially when using processor-intensive applications). Primarily though it's those phones that have been "jailbroken" (ie cracked to use different networks) and therefore may run hotter than the software would normally allow.

Apple have not as yet investigated the problem fully they are awaiting return of damaged phones and full diagnosis before saying anything much.
The Mac Rumour mill goes into overdrive whenever Apple have any hardware problems. Last time it was Powerbook batteries blowing up. They actually got hot and swelled a bit distorting the case. That was a bad batch of batteries, all recalled and replaced as with any automotive recall. Any damage to Powerbooks resulted in a replacement either case or complete machine. |

Only put up as an Informative post.
I Like Apple Mac Products and the I-Phone myself. Its the I-Player that seems to be a problem looking at UK reports but who knows what the youngsters that have had problems may have been doing with them? The Parents won't return them as such at the moment just showing them to Press and selling story. |
