Default Breakdown cover for ‘old’ cars

Have you found it increasingly difficult over the years to get cover? It seems, well I found anyway, that cover is more for cars 10yrs or less. Personal (i.e) you’re covered, not the car) gets round this to an extent but then a clause may yet still have the age of the car you’re in as a factor.

I'm with a company called start rescue, it is a personal cover, but the main questions i had for them when I joined a few years ago was about the age of my car. I too did have a few problems when asking about cover for my Rover. There are a few out there that won't cover a car this old.

Default Breakdown Cover

I’ve used Auto Aid for several years. It insures the driver not the car but my “youngest car” is 17 years old and the oldest was, until very recently, 22.
You have to pay any repair costs upfront and then reclaim them but they consistently appear in the best providers.

Mainstream ones mostly. I also was with autoaid and will return to them as Emergency Assist flatly refused to come out to a breakdown so they’re rubbish!

Never asked for breakdown cover.-----

Mainly ( I guess ) because I always service my own car and the wife's car and we've never broken down. --

I have been with the AA for 23 years.

Needed them 4 times as a 75 owner.
A broken front coil Spring 1.8
A puncture, thanks to over tightening at Kwik S of wheel nuts 1.8
An undertray coming loose and dragging on the road, an undertray that had been taken off and refitted a few days previous whilst the 75 was getting serviced at a Rover expert outlet. 2.0 diesel
Broken auxiliary belt on 1.8.

Age of car has never been an issue.
