Jules, are you saying one can lock the wheel in the centre position using the column lock when carrying out alignment?

Haynes mention an alignment notch at the head of the column and in the base of the wheel itself.

Whether they put it there or it already existed they don't say. It could be a DIY job BEFORE you remove the wheel in the first place.

Thanks for your reply.

I guess then, anybody getting their tracking done should make sure the steering wheel is dead centre before the tracking begins.

I get the impression from some of the posts that when the tracking is done the owner finds his steering wheel turned around slightly.

Which makes you wonder if some of the mechanics are not fully conversant as to how their system works.---

This is most likely to happen when a minor adjustment to one wheel only puts the tracking in spec. That may well be the case, but it's a lazy way not to slacken both track rod ends after fixing the steering wheel in the correct driving position. You can set total toe by adjusting only one side, but that can put the steering wheel way out of kilter.
