It's a 2-speed fan.
The K16 engines have always had a 2-speed fan. In earlier cases, it was the brush controlled (weak) system. In later models, it's the resistor-controlled method. Early 2-speed motors are susceptible to the same brush wear problem as other models with 3-speed motors. The chances are that your 2003 model has the earlier brush controlled motor. It seems to be operating normally, though I think you'll find the fan which cuts in at 105-106C is the same speed as the aircon fan speed. The high speed can be verified by disconnecting the engine temperature sensor and the engine running. You can also do it by fiddling with the trinary valve. Thanks tc for ur early morning post, i take it that the 2 speed cant be modified to take the resister? If not then i think il just wait till it stops and then do the brushes, i the mean time il test the high speed just for a listen,

No, the earlier motors don't accept a resistor system. If it does pack up, the later 2-speed one does need the resistor (preferably an uprated one). Or you could go with Jules' Kenlowe kit. He sells both anyway.
