The ABS needs a power supply but only so that it can act when the car is moving and there is a loss of traction from one or more wheels.---

So the ignition is ON and the car IS moving.---

Thanks for the advice so far. My questions are purely in relation to me replacing the ABS modulator and ensuring the braking system is filled correctly and completely and not to cause damage to anything else in the process or afterwards by not completing the task properly.

I had hoped to get this done and get her back on the road after being crashed into back in May by a prestige rental car that made a run for it. This was looking like the last obstacle to overcome having replaced the n/s strut assembly, power steering rack and n/s wing. As my luck would have it, she was reversed into last night, and now the n/s door and mirror will need quite a bit of TLC. I can't seem to catch a break with car problems at the minute.

OH !! Very sorry to hear that.

Over here, in France, only last week I saw a young girl reverse into the side of a parked car. She made no move to get out until I pointed to the rear corner of her car.

She got out, looked at the scrape on her back bumper, got back in her car and drove off leaving behind a car with one of its rear doors pushed in.--

Sometimes still use it if it's to hand but like I say it doesn't really matter what method you use if you have 2 people. (one to press the pedal the old fashioned way)

However for one man bleeding operation.......
Without having to pump the pedal my preferred method is inserting fluid via the bleed nipples, it's just quicker to expel the air and uses less fluid.

Even replacing the modulator which will full of air we've never had to use the T4.

Feed the new fluid into the slave nipples and the air will end up in the master in no time at all

I don't understand how this works Jules - if no-one is pumping the pedal, how goes fluid get sucked in through the nipples?

Can you write an idiot-proof guide for me?

There's no howto you just need 2 syringes (say 50ml) and a short piece of plastic or silicone tube.

Open each nipple in turn, doesn't really matter which order.

Couple of pumps of the pedal to expel dirty fluid out of each slave cylinder or simply let gravity do this for you.
Let half a cup full out.

Make sure Master level is down to minimum level each time.
Then pump in fresh fluid into each slave nipple with said syringe.

Use the 2nd syringe to extract excess fluid from the master.
Obviously don't let it overflow.

There is nothing difficult about this job unless the brake fluid hasn't been touched in years then you will be faced with seized nipples !
