Default Puller porn

Some great ideas thanks folks thanks but dont fancy heating it if i can avoid.

Spent way to much time last night looking at puller porn inspired by AndyN01 and have ordered a cheapo set "DA YUAN 14pcs Bearing Separator Puller Set 2" and 3 Splitters Remove Bearings Kit"

If the cheapo splitter above doesnt work shall have to try a set with a hydraulic ram but torn between a sealey PS980 or the US pro elbow type to finally empty my bank account getting, i prefer the look of the sealey if it fits. Any thoughts?

If i had a 7lb lump hammer and room to swing it i would go and show Nigel what he's bringing down on himself being this akward.

There's nothing like a bit of tool porn in the morning to make the day go better. .

I have a fair amount of Sealey stuff and it's been great. But I've also got some US Pro stuff and that's been up to the job too.

If funds allow go for the one that looks like it'd deal with much bigger and heavier stuff that what we have on a 75. That way you'll be spending your hard earned once on a tool that does the job. But make sure that it'll fit. I couldn't get the hydraulic bit to fit when I did mine it but was fine with the old-fashioned fine thread.

Fingers crossed for you.

Hi John,

Are you struggling with the inner or outer balljoint? I can't quite work it out even after reviewing the early posts.

If it's the inner, I posted details in the Spring of a Sykes Pickavant articulated puller which turned out to be the perfect choice! No heat, banging or dropping the subframe required!

If it's the outer then I sympathise because I struggled with mine until, by chance, I discovered that the angle of the hub is critical. When I pushed the bottom inwards towards the gearbox the balljoint pin released, but you do have to push down on the suspension arm to counteract its springiness. Four hands are a distinct advantage.

Hi, its the inner beasty ball joint into the subframe. Like you i discovered the outer one is easy if you push the hub in to line it up straight it just wiggles out and would do the outer ones all day if somebody wants to do the inner ones

Thanks for the tip i will keep it in mind but already ordered two sets of pullers. Out of interest and for later tonight oggling do you happen to know what model of Sykes Pickavant articulated puller it is?

Thanks. going out i a minute to try again with the threaded seperator that failed yday and if fail again vinegar is coming out, lucky already keep blue tack in the car

Ordered the sealey set even though is more expensive and it comes a day after my cheapo set but can be returned unused if victory will be mine tomorrow with the cheapo version. I like sealey got the short socket set and its saved my bacon a few times now so...

Success! Nothing like the sound of separating ball joint in the afternoon chill.

see photo of how i did it but it amounts to using the cheapo threaded splitter in combination with the hydraulic jack under it and the hammer head stuffed between arm and sub frame with pressure on from spring. The outer joint was back in the hub to allow the spring to provide some down force pivot in the arm.

First place jack under outer joint to lift hub up and provide room to insert splitter then put hammer head in for pivot. Tension up the splitter and release jack moving it to under the splitter where it presses on the 22mm arm nut. Then jack up as far as almost starting to lift the car off the stands then add more tension on the splitter using foot on spanner as to much resistance for hand alone with threads of splitter very greasy, bit more jack keeping eye on stands for movement and then crack it separates .

Just dashed in to cancel the splitters ordered yay.

Light fails now so i get to rest before refitting the new arm n bush. On a side note the moog bush fitted less than a year ago is properly and unexpectedly mashed up see below.

Brilliant news.

Hope it all goes back together relatively painlessly.

A bit frustrating about the bush .

Roll on a time when we can get quality spares that give good service for a good amount of time.

Cheers for the support tbh im not looking forward to battling with the bush bolts on my own it took an extra pair of hands last time that arent available now. Got a Rimmer supplied oem bush ready to go was going to reuse the Moog till it was found wanting so we will see what rimmers cheaper "after market" parts can do...

If you fancy investing £60 in a quality tool from a renowned British company here are the details.

Regarding the rear bush bolts, if you're prepared to remove the anti-roll bar saddle clamps (rusty screws in a confined space with poor visibility) then you can get a proper socket and torque wrench on those bolts!

Suspension is fun isn't it.

Simon. I never went near the roll bar. and used a flat 18mm spanner. Very easy to undo and do up.---

With the help of a 18 inch length of alloy scaffold tube to give some leverage.--
