Default Sunroof acting up today, Stuck Open.

My sunroof opened OK today as usual but wouldn't close.
I'm running a 5amp fuse which had blown for the first time in years so swapped it for a 10amp. Was advised not to use the 20amp to create a fail safe from blowing the motor, in the event of broken clips etc.

Anyway now it's acting very odd.

It wont close at all selecting close, but moves to close up to 6" only by selecting open and tilt.

Once closed by 6" the close button will activate to move it back open????

The upshot is I cant close it more than 6'' which renders me unable to risk driving anywhere.

Has anyone had similar or knows what might be the problem?

Remove the interior light, you can then access the motor, you can manually close the sunroof by using an Allen key.

Id guess the motor needs changing, and probably a clean and lubricate of the mechanism before fitting a replacement motor.

Sounds like it could be the clips for the sunshade have come apart and are fouling the tracks for the sunroof? If you remove the glass (6 torx) you should see what’s missing. There’s a link somewhere to YouTube for a BMW e46 sunroof repair how to which is a great help as it’s the same sunroof and has same issues

Hello Neil,

What happens if you hold the switch in the "close" position, does the roof move beyond six inches open then?

Before considering buying any parts I would try the sunroof calibration procedure. The ECU might be confused following the fuse blowing.

The official rating for the sunroof fuse has always been 20 amps.

Simon

Default Fixed it

Took of the light cover and wound the roof back to close.
Seemed very stiff.
Closed it electronically/ opened again electronically.
Cleaned and lubricated the mechanism and tracks. Viola!

Thanks so much for your advice and the link.
I was fully expecting to remove the glass and find broken shade clips but it all seems fine.
