Default Coolant Problem Resolved - chuffed! - Really!

Having bored most readers silly with my ongoing coolant problems over the last couple of months, and tried tactfully following the advice, after changing the thermostat, still having trouble with coolant boiling and overflowing the expansion tank, that made me take off the thermostat twice to check it out; then I replaced the inlet manifold gasket, still trouble. then went in to check the jiggle valve in the inlet manifold to find that all gunged up.

After cleaning that and thinking I'd sorted it, still got problems, so with the suggestions checked all again for airlocks.

This weekend was the first chance for a decent run/test and travelled 90 miles, and the temperature kept around the 93, maxed at 95; returned this evening with the same, so I am chuffed as I am convinced it is now solved.

( also no idle problem now as cleaned the inside of the throttle chamber and lubricated all moving parts)

Earlier reports suggested nothing was working to overcome the coolant ejection. What did you do to resolve it?

I think, and I'm no expert, that because the air could not vent through the jiggle valve, it built up an airlock therefore stopping the circulation of the coolant - there, I told you I'm no expert.

That's certainly what the jiggle valve's for. Maybe you would update us after a few hundred miles to confirm?

That's a good suggestion; as I now know how to watch the temperature on the diagnostics, I find that interesting to observe. I'll keep an eye on it, next long journey not due for a while.

Thanks again to all on here who made sensible suggestions along the way.

It's basically a ball bearing, mounted in a small recess in the inlet manifold which will allow gas ( compressed air/fuel, air or steam) past it (to the header tank via a pipe) but seals the coolant. They get gunged up and stop working and the head fills with trapped air or steam and is no longer cooled by the coolant - ie overheats.

Default Not so chuffed now!

Last week I had problems of overheating again, oh joy, when I was on an intended long run away - relayed back. Replaced the thermostat which only gave me the same symptoms.

Temperature coming up to a ridiculous high, fan cutting in, no particular loss of coolant, no mayonaise. Seemed to me again, that the thermostat had not opened, that rear rigid pipe not becoming hot.

Today, drained the system, took off the inlet manifold and found there was no problem with that old jiggle valve. replaced manifold. made sure there was no blockage in the heater by blowing down the hose, several times. Refilled, according to the Rover instructions, ran up to temperature, did I say ridiculous, again high. This time, no heat in that rear rigid pipe, low heat on one hose into the heater.

Will again, check for airlocks when cool.

You're on the right lines Fred. That means that there's no flow through the radiator. Now you've got to find out why.
