Noisy / tappy V6
Hi all,
Got a problem with my 2.0 v6... Car has been standing since Monday, went to start it this afternoon & sounded like a very noisy tappet. However it certainly wasn't from the top of the engine (and definitely not manifold rattle - I've dealt with that before). The noise got quieter as the engine temperature started to rise towards operating temp but did not disappear. I, of course, checked the oil which was at the correct level (car has had a maximum of 6k miles between oil changes all of its life. The oil it's running on now was changed about 1000 miles ago. The noise is loudest if you crouch down next to the front wheels and is equally loud on either side, but it is audible with the bonnet up too. The noise is in time with engine speed, but happens once for each full revolution of the engine & it does not get louder with revs - anything over 2k and the engine noise almost drowns it out. Cambelt kit & aux belts were done when it was last serviced. Here's two videos, one crouching down at the OSF wheel and one under the bonnet. https://youtu.be/-uyAAzEGgcU https://youtu.be/a8qaK0OYTlU TL;DR car sounds tappy. Oil and coolant are at the correct levels. It's not overheating. Cambelt kit & auxbelt replaced along with water pump recently. From lower down the engine - definitely not top end. Any ideas? |

Tensioner and idler pulley changed as well?
I once owned a V6 many years ago with a belts only change that had a rattle that come and went like this and it turned out the idler pulley had self destructed! Second video does not sound good was that filmed near the engine cover? |

The noise in the first video sounds like one I am getting from my V6 Freelander. The noise in the second video does not but that may just be due to the recording. My noise comes and goes unpredictably and doesn't affect the performance. I had thought it was a bad tappet and I actually went to the trouble of replacing some of the tappets on the front cylinder bank. There was no unusual wear on the tappets, cams or any other parts I had out. As I had them off I replaced the belts but didn't replace the idler while I was in there. In hindsight that would have been a good idea, if only to rule it out! I have also opened up and inspected my intake plenum and installed a pair of uprated VIS motors as one of mine had packed it in so that isn't the issue either.
I am really not looking forward to opening it up again to change the idler but it seems that may be needed. |

It's funny how there is always just one noise in an engine that disrupts the normal. My 2.5 V6 has one mild clatter on startup after a three or four day sit. It started being obvious after around 50000 km from new. It's not quite the hollow sounding noise in the post and I have put it down to oil draining from a hydraulic tappet - just one. I don't let the engine idle at 1000 rpm when cold from startup but after two or three seconds bring the revs up to 1500 -2000 for a short period then blip the throttle three or four times. By then the oil seems to have circulated and all is well. The alternative I suppose is the possibility of piston slap until warm but that never did anybody much harm - didn't in the old days anyway. Had a Montego back awhile that had an erroneous clatter from new and it covered over 150000 mls during its lifetime with no harm.

Fresh oil and filter.
Italian tune up. Slippers and pipe banned. Problem fixed. Bet ya!

Sebastian, Very good advice here from John. My engine sounds so much better after renewing the timing belt tensioner pulley and idler wheel, plus the auxiliary belt tensioner. I’d say that you should take this suggestion very seriously. Simon
