Has this oil appeared recently? How much is 'loads'? What does it look like (a dark brown layer/globules, a light golden 'mousse', yellow froth, ??). Was it apparent last time you checked the coolant level? When was that? Who could this 'someone' be?

This could well be a Oil Cooler Failure.
Its happened on BMW's where the water turns very Black and oily.
Not heard it on ours though.
It happens when this fails and allows High Pressure oil to push its way in to the much lower pressure Cooling system.

I have. The exchanger matrix corrodes till it allows cross-flow. The only mixing is though the water pump which is less emulsifying than an internal leak into the engine oil. It's less moussified and darker in the coolant. Sounds a likely answer to me.

Sounds like you found a good dealer to buy the car from.

Suggest to the local repairer (try and find a BMW specialist or a Rover Specialist) that it is the engine oil cooler so that they look at it first.

I've certainly heard of it happening on a couple of M74R engines.

All CDTi owners & Petrol for that matter should check their antifreeze is RED as was supplied from the factory.
Spec is OAT Long Life

Don't use the cheaper Blue or Green Antifreezes.

Halfords have their own brand of OAT known as advanced. Suitable for all my cars, luckily.

And it's more expensive that the 100% OAT concentrate sold by Vauxhall depots for example. I believe Halford's antifreeze is already diluted to 50% so you fill it straight from the bottle. Of course, you pay extra for that.
