its either # 1 or #2 as it depends which one it is?

I think on the OEM part there is a flexi on the front of the cat and if thats gone there needs to be some welding done or you might need a new whole cat, which is quite expensive!

The part that is actually marked with the 2 is the catalytic converter, the part just in front of this is the flexi joint. The flexi joint is welded in place on original exhausts but a clamp on version can be bought on ebay here

I've never fitted this part but will check on Monday if it can be done easily, as I have an original, used, catalytic converter downpipe.

Tommy :-)

You can buy a new flexi from exhaustparts.co.uk for less than £30.
You can get a clamp on one or a weld on one.
You will need to cut the old one out.
Be careful to order the correct one with the right diameter pipework to fit over your down pipe and exhaust pipe.

It should look something like this, depending if you still have the original one on, this is an after market one

Cheers Arctic – could this being flaky account for the thump-thump-thump I get under the car sometimes when I try and reverse too slowly and almost stall (presumably the exhaust flapping about and banging on something), or is that likely to be something else?

The noise sounds more like the bottom engine mount is shot. If so that will have knackered your flexi pipe. You need to make sure you have a good bottom mount before fitting a new flexi otherwise you are wasting your time.

The noise and banging could also be a failing DMF though. Id go for the bottom mount first. Its the most likely.

Already replaced. It's the exhaust banging, I'm sure of it.

The ceramic element used in the OEM catalytic converters is known to detach from the case. It then starts to rattle like a brick in an oil drum.

It can also partially block the exhaust, on the V6 we had it gradually got worse and worse until the car would go no faster than 35mph, stuck a new one on and all back to normal.

If you have a V6 with good Vis motors and it's still sluggish i'd be looking here (not applicable to op I know)..
