I would suggest that you run the car up to temperature & check the transmission fluid level (using the correct procedure).
Then, if you have 'normal' drive in 2,3,4,5 & reverse, take it for a drive using the gears 'manually'. You may well find that it will sort itself. It's worth a try at the very least. |

If it moves forward, D should not make a difference.
The selector is an electronic switch and sends signals to the gearbox. Perhaps this can be 'adjusted' to the correct position. Maybe there is even some info on that on here. Have one automatic that sometimes is close to doing this as well, but ok so never looked into adjusting it. Rob

Sometimes have to give mine a bit of a shake to get it to pick up in D. Sometimes it behaves as though in N.

Put the car in park, loosen the nut (Ensure the cable moves freely) Move the stick from P to N, then back to P, nip up the nut and give it a try

Having to adjust the cable doesn't really explain why the gearbox was working normally before being stood up 3mths ago.

i had the same thing happen after some years ago going on a 3 month trip to the UK.
Started it up, had reverse and drive but gear changes were smashing into gear. It gradually got better after a couple of days driving. As a matter of interest some months ago the auto changes were getting harsh again, oil was pretty new so added some Nulon (aussie brand) auto trans conditioner and the auto has been perfect since. Im not a big fan of additives but as these boxes are getting to be 20 years old, seals etc are getting old and hard so are now needing a bit of help . Saves changing the solenoids at this time |

Had a similar issue when my battery went low the car started but it didn't have drive and the gear indicator didn't show what gear you were in I'd say give the batter a good charge and put it back on see if that cures it also check if you have any leaks perhaps give the gearbox multi plug connectors that sit on top of the gearbox a good blast with some contacts cleaner as well
