The one I have seen had an internal spring, which I assumed to allow a vent to open once pressure reaches a certain level (within the circular section if I recall, it the section that does not contain the vortex or the filter section as would be in the non vortex version)

I replaced the depression limiter diaphragm and spring in my car as I thought it may have been sticking, but it didn't look worn and had done well over 300K miles. |
