I have had a very similar issue with my previous 75 9 year's ago.
I didn't have previously wiring issues.
But Speedo intermittent and false fuel gauge reading at the same time.
Eventually no Speedo .
I changed drivers side complete hub ,abs sensor and drive shaft and cured the problem .
I think general corrosion and age must have been just upsetting the signal

Just had a similar problem to yours with losing the speedometer on my car - luckily only a bad connection at the plug and socket inside the wing.

Great to get such an easy fix - doesn't happen often enough for me.
