simple answer is yes it rotates , but its stiff as the top bearings are under full spring pressure .. the force you can create with your arms are far less than that from a Power steering system ..

Too much over thinking

Ok, it rotates but only after I used a lot of force (initially).

What about this?

And this.

Sadly it looks like you have nipped or damaged the seal - can happen when fitting the bearing if you aren't careful enough.

I didn't Mike - that's how they were when they were delivered. The pics in post 12 were taken just minutes after this one
(5 and 8 minutes to be exact ).

As you can see they're still sealed in their bags.

Ah well whoever built the assembly up got it wrong then.

It's easy to do as the overlap is quite shallow and if you twist the bearing out of alignment a bit too much the seal disappears below the metal lip.

I bought just the bearings and had exactly the same thing happen on one side so dismantled it and reset the seal - luckily there was no damage. Also gave it a bit more grease while I was in there and took a bit more care refitting it, not wanting to make the same mistake twice.

Judging by the 1st pic in post 12 the plastic seal has actually been cut. In which case I'll have to replace it. What do you think of these - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161335241193?ul_noapp=true compared to these https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-RNX100081 or these https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-RNX100081P?

Yes it does look like your seal is damaged - it is going to have to come apart anyway so strip it down and see what the seal looks like once the top bearing cover is off.

When I did mine I just replaced the bearing itself - item 9 here: https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-GRID001542

You already have new housings - as long as they are made to the original drawings they should be fine - you can compare them with your originals to check.

Two bearings from Rimmers (item 9) would cost £42 plus £9.45 shipping = £51.45. Do you think they're any better than the bearings in the £43.98 pair?

PS. I suspect all the bearings come from China anyway these days - even the ones from Rimmers - so it's hard to know which are ok and which aren't.

The Rimmer bearings are genuine Rover and the Ebay items appear to be unbranded, but you could be right they might all emanate from China.

I only referenced the Rimmer page to show the part - you may be able to get them cheaper elsewhere.

Either way it has to be your choice as it is your car. If I was buying them again I'd go for a branded item - Febi bearings are available on Ebay for under £17.00 each delivered.
