The section to the slave cylinder should be full.-- If not then reverse bleed the lower pipe before making the connection between the two pipes.
I'm intending to connect the MC to the SC and pressurise the system with a Sealey VS0205, which will keep the MC full while the SC bleed valve is open. Let the air out, then close the bleed valve, check fluid level, refit diaphragm, refit cap.

It doesn't look like old stock to me.

Re the fluid spillage: I think some fluid was accidentally put on top of the diaphragm by whatever/whoever pre-filled it. This leaked out of the vent hole during transit and/or storage. Like this:

If you've got a spare cap, try it. Turn it upside-down, add a liquid and watch it flow out of the vent hole.

It doesn't leak any more - but now I can't tell if it's still full to the step or not (without taking the cap off). It might be, it might not.

Could it be that they are selling old stock and are trying to worm their way out of honouring any kind of waranty on it ?

Update

After an 8-day 'discussion' Rimmers have said that their supplier* has informed them that it's ok to take the cap off, provided that it and the diaphragm are refitted correctly.

* The supplier might be LuK (Shaeffler) or it might not.

Rimmers apologised for the delay and inconvenience caused.

Interesting. Where are you going to introduce the new fluid ??? From the reservoir or from the bleed nipple ?

As the top ( New. ) section is supposed to be full Fill the bottom from the bleed nipple and plug the two together.

A lot less work and you won't have to disturb the new piece at all.

Best of luck with it.---
