Default Handbrake adjustment - not done properly

Hi all.

A bit of a rant......

As some of you know I've recently acquired a "one owner from new" Conny SE diesel tourer with just 75K miles .

Full service history and owned by a delightful couple - both now octogenarians .

Passed it's MoT but the handbrake wasn't how I remembered mine when correctly adjusted and with one of Arctic's compensator’s (Fitted by him at a Nano - cheers mate).

So I thought I'd have a check of the wheel hub adjusters.

Guess what..... miles out. I actually lost count of the number of "clicks" on the passenger side. I was wondering if I was going the wrong way . But I wasn't.

I don't get it. What is so difficult about popping a wheel off, clicking a little wheel around with a screwdriver, checking for binding etc. and putting the wheel back on?

The handbrake adjustment nut was, of course, wound up until it could go no further. It was touch and go whether my deepest socket would get to it.

A new compensator will go in asap but at least, for now, I now have a working and locking solid handbrake .

With grateful thanks to all those who have posted about how to do it correctly. Cheers.

And breathe.

Many of the younger "technicians" will not understand or know how to do them properly. Adjusting at the lever end is the "easy" option but not "the way to do it" as a certain little puppet used to say!

I use a box spanner for that one It's actually an old imperial set but there's one that fits . Never throw anything away .......

This was the handbrake 'adjustment' that I found on my car...

Should add, this was after I'd slackened the nut right off to allow me to remove the centre console.

Luckily I had made up a new stainless steel compensator in anticipation of changing the carpet from Mk2 to Mk1 so I was able to do that whilst I had it out.

Whoever did the job on Mrs Noc's car wound the nut so far down it damaged the thread and I had to cut it off.

I'm still using some of my dad's tools that he used in the trade, I know some of them date back to before I was born 64 years ago, I remember him using some of them when I was an apprentice at the garage he worked at. Keep them all

Know what you mean Andy. The problem has already been highlighted in one post.....no knowledge of the adjustment procedure. Another one is’ do it this way it’s quicker and easier’. Bone idle I call it. I was always taught,if you don’t know, ask.

Do it once, do it properly I was taught, along with measure twice, cut once. These have stayed with me because it was drummed into me as an apprentice.
