I had a long run down to Salcombe Devon a few years back for a sad affair, funeral.I t was in early February and it was absolutely freezing. I put the display up for the temperature of the water, and it varied between 82-86, no chance of it over heating.. I would think that the thermostat was also ok?

Took mine for short run yesterday, six miles each way. The gauge rose to the half way level, regarded as normal in the owners manual. How does one bring up the water temperature display?

Half way is very vague.--So much better for all to understand if you use the clock face to show what you mean.

6 or 7 or 8 o'clock. Most cars run at 9 o'clock.---

Hi Paul.
Follow T-Cut great guide this is the part for the temp, taken from the link above. And below.

Enable Trip Screen Diagnostics:

a) Put key into ignition and turn it to position 1 (instruments activated).
a2) If you intend driving with diagnostic mode active, start the engine now.
b) Press and hold the trip reset button. This is the button sticking out near the speedometer.
c) Your LCD display will show "test 1.-"
d) Immediately press the reset button every half second until you get to "test 19.-". (19.0 allows access to diagnostic mode)
e) The display will now show alternating "Log 1 -on" / "Log 1 -off"
f) While it shows "Log 1 -off" press the reset button and. .
g) With no delay press within a half second (repeatedly if necessary) to get to the required section.
h) The screen will appear similar to the earlier one, but is a different series. Keep pressing every half second to select one of the following functions (there is no title on screen).

It's OK to drive the car with any particular diagnostic screen active (eg. coolant temperature). If it's displaying time, engine or speed related data, this will change in real time. DO NOT be tempted to swap between screens while driving! Turning off the ignition ends the diagnostic session

7.0 Coolant/Engine temperature - changes every whole degree Centigrade. (eg: 021+ is 21°C)

Thanks Arctic, will do if the gauge reading rises above the half way mark, which the owners manual clearly states as the norm.

The original concern not from me but from a seller on E-Bay who thought his vehicle may be faulty because the gauge only ever rose to the half way mark.

Hi Paul.
Yes the manual may well state the half way mark, 9.00 o'clock on the dial, that does not go to say that the engine is at the proper engine temperature, it is just a guide line.

It will be half way if it is 75c or 100c so you engine could be running cooler than it should be.

By doing the test it will show you the true temp of the engine, set it and go for a drive of about 10 miles keeping your eye on the reading, at this time of year with a good working original thermostat you are look for a reading between 83 to 87 when you pull back out side of your home leave the engine running for another 10 minutes to see if the temp stays as it is or rises.

If you getting a reading of 72 to 76 then the thermostat is opening to soon and not letting the engine get up to the best temp it should, it is then you can add an inline thermostat.

Do the test and let us know.

Arctic, thanks for the tip. I only normally do short runs, so the process you mentioned will be very useful in ascertaining if the engine is running at its best.

The car could do with a bit of a run as I've had it for seven weeks today and only clocked up about 300 miles of local running in the process, during which its hardly been above 60 mph.

Default Test Run Results

Right here goes. 14.8 mile test run, 7.4 miles each way with a 5 minute stop at destination with the engine running.

Normal running 84-88, rose briefly to 94 but that was climbing a steepish hill in third gear, and it soon dropped back to the mid 80's.

At destination with the engine running, the reading was a steady 84 after five minutes.

Leaving the engine running for ten minutes after arriving home is not really practical as I only have on street parking. It was 84 when I switched it off.

The run was on mostly minor roads with a maximum speed of about 50mph, but with plenty of up hill and down dale.
