Epic mot fail

My best friend for the last 12 years has finally reached the end I just wondered if anyone wants her for spares as a lot of the car is still in good condition
am open to offers if you do.

Doesn't look that bad, mainly wear and tear items. How much will a replacement car cost and how much will the spares to repair your existing car cost?

The garage said about £1000 then theres the cambelts if anyone can do the lot for under £1000 I would be interested

So, concentrate on the failed items & the advisories can be done as & when throughout the year.

Exhaust emissions will be out due to the exhaust blowing - any indication as to where this is? Rear silencer, mid section, front pipe/flexi?

Replace N/S front lower arm (advise changing the rear bush too while you're at it)

Replace O/S rear upper arm

Renew brake pipes front to rear both sides & bleed brakes (you could incorporate the two front brake pipes here to save bleeding again at a later date).

More than likely just adjustment on the handbrake shoes (possibly a stretched compensator).

Certainly not £1,000's worth of work there.

That is no way a right off!

New exhaust and the rest is general maintenance. I'm sorry to say but if the car was reasonably maintained then those items would not be an issue

Cambelt again general maintenance for certain models of these cars.

Thanks for the above comments i am 55 next year don't have a garage let alone a ramp 20 years ago laying on my back under a car was fine but now with hands and other joints rubbish its not easy so if someone wants to help me out I am happy to pay for there time and get the parts it would be appreciated and Palker don't judge what you haven't looked after for the last 12 years

Agree, you need somewhere to work. working on the drive is not fun.
I am determined if I move I am having a car ramp. Not sure If 2 post or 4.

I sorry to hear about the difficulties you are having with your mot it doesnt seem that bad to me I have seen a lot worse the main thing is not to loose hope I am sure you will get it sorted soon my car failed its mot and again I had a long list I just took my time working through each point what I could do myself i.e me being a pavement mechanic and what I would need a mechanic with a lift for just like you I had to replace the exhaust £££ maybe look at national tyres they offer payment assist nobody said owning a rover was easy but well worth it when everything is working like it should .

This is good advice Martin. This company is perhaps better known to club members as genuine MGR parts suppliers "E Car Parts Ltd" (but not to be confused with Euro Car Parts!).

Regarding your MOT failure please remember that "advisories" are not necessarily an indication that work is required. Looking at your list, you can immediately disregard the first four which are simply benign observations.
Discs: All brake discs wear and some are lightly scored and your braking efficiency is obviously up to standard so don't worry about those. If they really were a problem the garage would have added them to the failure list.
Pads & tyre: The rear brake pads are a service item and easily checked. Their rate of wear will be extremely slow so unless they are almost down to the backing plates there's no cause for immediate concern. It's a similar situation for the tyre.
You're going to replace the leaking exhaust so the comment that it's noisy is mischievous.
Power steering: Ask the test centre exactly which component has a "slight seepage" of power steering fluid.
Suspension: It's normal for suspension components to be corroded on any vehicle since they spend their life in a hostile environment. The report says that they are NOT seriously weakened. Again I would ask the test centre precisely which components they're referring to. If it's a genuine concern you deserve a quick and precise answer.

Your next move? My recommendation is to book your pride and joy into BS Motors either for a repeat MOT test or to quote for the failure items but excluding the advisories.
