Default Rare 1.3 Capri on Ebay

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1977-Ford...cAAOSwLFJfgDt6

On first glance it looks a little rough, however I can't see any holes, and the sills are in good condition, so it might be rescuable?

I owned a white Mk 1 1300GT Capri back in the late 70s and although it looked sporty it was woefully underpowered. 0-60 eventually and you'd be hard pushed to break the motorway speed limit by enough to get pulled over.

My mother, by virtue of marrying a hateful man, had a Mk3 1.3 Capri, in what I think was Signal Red, in the late 80s and early 90s. Woefully slow, I think my 1989 Renault 5 had as much power as it did lol. But it did look good all over. Ziebart stickers fading on the screens, suggested it was rustproofed from new. Under the bonnet shone too, as the previous owner and FB (as I affectionately referred to him) would clean it down, polishing it with wd40, or Mr Sheen. There was so much room under the bonnet, you could have nearly climbed in to clean it lol.

So basic, it did not even come with parcel shelf supports, never mind a parcel shelf lol. It did however, have a heated window, but no rear wash wipe, nor spoiler - still remember its registration, JWN 35X (an English reg in Northern Ireland was quite rare then)

I would be wary of that one listed as it has the spare wheel well painted and that is a notorious rust spot on them.

I had a mate many years ago who had a 1.3 Capri. As has been said woefully slow and what made it worse was it was an Auto

We replaced the engine with a 1.6 out of an Escort Sport and ditched the Auto box, it felt so much better. We did it on a Saturday and drove it to the pub Saturday evening ( those were the days )

I was lucky enough many years ago to have a 3.0 litre and if the right one came along it would be a scratch I would like to scratch again.

Had a look at this one last week https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1976-Ford...oAAOSwgVZfQOLb .
A bit more work that I want to take on at the moment but I was close to making an offer on it.

Default A nice project.

It looks solid enough to make a good car, a 2.0 engine and a type 9 box would make it better, the diff would need an upgrade too, the engine bay harness would need swapping but with Capri prices on the rise I'd take this on. I'm hoping to inherit my late brothers Capri soon.

I've always wondered what the 3L felt power wise both on acceleration and top end. What would you compare it to in modern times?

In modern terms probably could be beaten by a Diesel Fiesta but in its time it was quick, a friend had a Dolomite Sprint and they were about the same in acceleration and top speed. Just under 9 seconds 0 to 60. I had 128mph out of the Capri once on a German autobahn but 120 was probably more realistic. Fuel consumption was not great, mid to high teens around town and mid 20's on a run keeping it legal.

I test drove several before I bought mine including a couple of manuals, the Auto suited the 3.0 better in my opinion as the clutch was heavy and the gearbox was quite clunky. A 5 speed might have been a nice option but nothing at the time was available, the 2.8 had not been released when I had mine.

I once drove a 2.8 and though quicker was firmer and less comfortable.

"been in Cornwall all its life"......a 'seaside' car then & it shows to be honest
A nice little project but exposed to all that sea air who knows what's lurking.
I reckon they should've kept the 1.3 cross-flow for the Escorts & made the base engine a 1.6 cross-flow for the Capri & Cortina.

The 3.0 Essex V6 was a lovely sounding engine although suffered quite badly with overheating issues & fibre cam gear failure (they did a steel upgrade but it used to rattle a bit!).

I preferred the Essex to the Cologne V6 personally.

Not always the case, have you been to the Isle of Wight? not many rusty cars over there and that is surrounded by the sea. In my opinion its the salt or lack of salt on the roads in the warmer parts of the UK that stops them rusting.

Agree with you on the Essex, a nice lazy engine and huge amounts of torque, nerd fact here it was originally designed to be a diesel engine hence the combustion chambers in the pistons but Ford needed a Petrol V6 so the compression was lowered and spark plugs were put in the holes where the ignitors would have gone.

I was out in my Capri today, I revisited the old boy-racer circuit where I spent most of my youth.
The last time I was there stood posing with a red Capri was a very long time ago, it was normally on a Friday/Saturday night trying to pick up girls.

Instead I had to settle for a rainy Monday afternoon, it was fun to reminisce though, but I couldn't find anyone to race.

This old girl has had all rot cut out and replaced with new metal, floor, inner wings, inner sills, rear arches and bulkhead, new outta sills, front wings and bonnet.
The engine and gearbox was all rebuilt, rear axle and steering rack reconditioned, all I had to do was give it a respray and fix the electrics.

The Escorts and Capri's are a perfect investment, an investment you can enjoy, certainly worth considering.
The MGB that I bought just didn't have the same presence and enjoyment as the Capri's do, but I guess it's all down to personal taste.
