The story continues:
I managed to find the parking aid ECU, after much dismantling of linings etc. It's a black one, assume earlier type. It was clean and dry, no sign of damp.I unplugged the two connectors and applied switch cleaner then re-assembled.Still not working, just the 5second long beep .
Next I took the bumper off again and disconnected all the sensors- checked for power at all 4- yes 12v ish . re-connected and cleaned all sensors- not working. No audible clicks from any sensor either. Where to go from here? New ECU? Is it possible to bench test individual sensors by applying 12v from an external source and hopefully hearing a click or is the click derived from the ECU?

Thanks, I have that on the Rave disk. My car is not like that, there is no removable panel. I had to take the whole right side lining out to access the ECU- many screws and fragile plastic clips....

If you can get the car to a T4, or you have the TOAF software, you can read the live diagnostics which will tell you which sensor. Worth a try!

Hi Robert,
I've had a similar problem and solved it with Toaf
I'm in Hazel Grove and could bring the laptop over if you think it might help.
And I think I may have a spare sensor.

Malcolm

The click is from the sensor and that indicates it is working - seems a stretch but as all your sensors are silent ie no click - they all could be dead

"they all could be dead"
I think this is very unlikely. On mine I found one duff sensor was the problem. I think for safety reasons, if one sensor fails, the ecu switches them all off.

Yes, they all have to work for the system to work. But if one is broken, the rest should be clicking.

Thanks to all for information , and Malcolm for the kind offer with TOAF. Why didn't I think of that? I have an ancient XP laptop with TOAF loaded but have only once dared to connect it to the car and did not investigate parking sensor info on it, in fact I didn't realize I could. I'll put TOAF on again and see what results I get, then report back. Thanks again

Default Reverse sensor

HI. Have a listen to each sensor closely whilst in reverse(ignition on and engine off of course)you will hear each one clicking. If a sensor or wiring is faulty then it will be the one that you cant hear anything coming out of. Just a thought unless you have already solved it. Stay safe. Tony
