Value for money
Apparently Gareth Southgate the England men's football manager has agreed a two-year contract extension as England manager, keeping him in charge until after Euro 2024.
Southgate’s salary is thought to have increased from £3million per year to around £5m plus bonuses https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/foo...4-b967553.html He took over the managers role in 2016 and has won nothing and in my opinion, nor will he. We wont have long to wait for the world cup, so will I have to eat my words? England women’s football team manager, Sarina Wiegman, reportedly earns over £4 million less than men’s manager, Gareth Southgate. https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/...-b2135740.html Sarina Wiegman took over the role in September 2021, in 10 months she won the 2022 Euros. I'm of the opinion Sarina is "value for money" and Gareth is not. macafee2 |

Southgate has certainly done a lot better than the managers he followed,in my opinion, going right the way back to Bobby Robson. At least we have have made a final and semi final under him, although I do point the blame mostly his way for loosing those matches because of his poor decisons and tactics. That's not to say the players don't share some blame as well.Italia 90 was the best tournament ever for me and my greatest sporting disapointment having come so close to becoming world champions.I agree,a new improved contract is premature.Lets see how we do in Qatar now he has something to build on and there is some genuine expectation.A new contract or not should have resulted from this latest competition.Despite the brilliant recent success of the ladies team, you can't compare the scale of mens football worldwide to that of the ladies. So sadly there is a wide differential in salaries regardless of who has been more successful.Hopefully that will change if the ladies team continue to put trophies on the table

I am no fan of Southgate because he picks a bad team and makes bad decisions. You only have to look at who took the penalties that were missed for the men to see decision making capability macafee2 |

Selecting players to take a penalty who have played little or no part in the game is just poor judgement.Particularly when the outcome of a major final is at stake.
