unfortunatly, i would have to agree with t-cut. after experiencing hgf myself, these are the exact scenarios i was faced with.

if it is hgf, water is being pushed out because the cooling system is being pressurised by the exhaust gasses entering the cooling system through the headgasket, as tc said.

there is a little saving grace that is as long as there is plenty of water in the system, and you dont let it overheat, you will be fine to run it (short distances anyway)
with mine, i drove it 60 miles home, and circa 50 miles a day for a full week before it finally went in for repair. it needed about a litre every 10-15 miles, so i just put 2 litres in every time i set off home.

MR Robson, thanks for the concurance of view with T-Cut and the re-assurance that short journeys with H2O to hand should be OK.
Just need to get the vehicle over to the Garage tomorrow and leave it with them.
Mike

not a problem

whatever you do, DONT LEAVE THE COOLANT BOTTLE CAP OFF like i did. it had a serious over heat after about 10 miles, then would overheat after 3 or 4 miles, using lots of water along the way. but bear in mind i had the advantage of the outside temp. it was jan last year, so temperatures were low +, which makes a large difference to temps weve recently been experiencing.

the good thing about these types of hgf (if that is the problem) is that water doesnt contaminate the oil system, so as said, as long as youve got lots of water to hand, the car will be ok for short journies.

funny thing is, although the temperature was very high on mine at times, i never saw the overheating light, so either it didnt work, or it didnt get too hot?

Seems that I have a very similar experience to yours of last January, no ICONs on the dash but Temp running high, will be carrying much water for the 6 mile journey to the Garage tomorrow unless the AA come to the rescue and deliver it to the Garage. I think it sounds like the HGF on this old car.

Here is an interesting little video on KV6 Gaskets

Well, AA met and collected Car for delviery to Garage. Good news from AA man's point of view is that he feels it is NOT HGF as he could not detect any exhaust Gases in the Coolant.
He feels it was Thermostat due to fact that the upper hose pipe was good and warm but the lower one was much/ too cool after the engine had warmed up.
Kaiser Thermostat housing and Stat will be fitted by Garage who will also give it a good looking over and T4.
So fingers Crossed over the next week or so!

It doesn't explain residual pressure when cold.

Right, 9am had a call from the Garage............good given that they had planned for it to be worked on Tuesday............

i) Thermo and Metal Housing now installed,
ii) OAT replaced.
iii) Breather hose needed replacing
iv) Been on T4 and its all behaving as it should

Fingers Crossed all is back to normal.............at least it is according to the garage. Will be collected at 4pm today as requested by garage "when ready for customer collection".

Will post this evening to confirm outcome and temp range from Kaiser Thermo Stat.........motorway and urban behaviour.

glad its all sorted mike .as you know and the other garage has just confirmed the engine is in good health ,your problem wasnt related to anything proir... happy motoring ,as you know our guys would not fit the metal one due to the amount of work it involves as it is not a reconised part .but im glad you have now had it fitted so the stat is now off the weak point list
