I remember I was at the Race of Champions (1st non championship F1 race of the season ) when the sad news came through from Hockenheim.

I was driving rather quickly on the A38 near Burton on Trent in my Frogeye Sprite when I heard. It slowed me down quite a lot.

Brilliant programe,I didn't know much about him before watching this.Such an unassuming chap,he didn't seem aggressive enough to be a world champion.Shocking to see that the newspaper headline put his speed at 170+ mph at the time of the crash.

If you haven't already been then the the small Jim Clark museum in Dun's is well worth a visit. I've been 3 times.
April 4th 2018 marks the 50th year since we lost this Scottish farmer. And I'm aiming to be up at Dun's at the same time. Jim Clark was supposed to be driving a Ford GT40 mark 4 at Brands Hatch on that fatal day, but chose the Formula 2 at Hockenheim instead.

Jim Clark
When I heard that my hero Jim Clark had been killed I lost all interest in motor racing. I had followed him through his career & considered him the best driver ever to have graced the motor racing track. Unlike Stirling Moss who thrashed his cars round the track Jim Clark caressed them to perform great things. It wouldn't have mattered which car he drove it would always have been a winner. I will be at his graveside next March for the first time, probably with tears in my eyes. The closest I got to him in real life was at swallow Falls in North wales when he entered the RAC rally. He was asked how it was going to which he replied " getting the corners rounded off nicely" referring to the bent corners on his Lotus Cortina. Next year he was killed. RIP Jim.

Strange how you remember where you were when you heard sad news.
I was driving with my mum & sister to visit friends near Leswalt outside Stranraer when the news came on the radio. |
