Default 2.5 V6 Autobox problems...

I was out in the car on Saturday morning when the car started playing me up. It was similar to driving a manual with a slipping clutch. It got worse and worse until their was no drive at all and that all happened in a couple of miles.

The AA man was pretty sure it was the torque convertor that given up the ghost and I've just spoke to the garage who are under the same impression.

I'm hoping to pick up a 2nd hand autobox and get them to swap it for me. The garage owner was on the phone to an automatic specialist today who quoted £1300 to recondition it but also said if I was trying to get one at the scrappys to be careful because there are apparently 2 different types of gearbox though he didn't know which was the right one for my car.

Apparently there is a P13 and P11 model.

Does anyone have any idea what the difference is or will I have to get him to remove the naffed one first to find out?

Any help or info would be greatfully appreciated.

Dave

It would be best to lift the car and see what's written on the sticker on the gearbox, it's the only way to be 100% sure which model you have.

btw, what's the mileage of your car ?

The cars done just 93,000 miles.

The guy at the garage had a quick look for me while he was on the phone for a sticker or something on the gearbox as the car was on the ramps but he didn't see anything. He suggested dropping the autobox out to double check which model it was.

Is it just a sticker as that sounds like it may have fallen off possibly.

Many thanks for answering.

Dave,
I could be wrong, but I think that the prefix is also on a plate on the gearbox ecu behind the glovebox. I think for your 2.5 petrol, it should be pr002 or pr012. The pr012 is the later gearbox which I think was fitted with the hardened reverse piston to stop this cracking/failing.
I am not sure if the old ecu works with the new gearbox, but I would have thought it would.
I think the pr013 is the diesel.

Found some more information now, but in German.
http://www.r75.info/ftp_root/admins/...DENT_JATCO.pdf
It looks as if the sticker is on the front of the gearbox below the filler bung and there should be a stamp also with the pr number which looks to be on the top of the gearbox somewhere.
Sorry that I dont speak German so cant translate.
But confirmed yours should be PR002 or PR012 according to this.

May seem a silly question but has anyone checked the fluid level in the autobox.

Mine demonstrated exactly the same symptoms but over a shorter distance ie 100 yards or so not two miles. felt like a clutch slipping and increasingly no drive. Accompanied by a smell which I now know to be hot transmisssion fluid

Hose from box to oil cooler had come adrift - a not unheard of happening I understand. All fluid dumped on the road so it was easy to see but if you had a smaller leak you might not have noticed.

Fix was about £35 for a hose and 5 litres of fluid about £30. Plus labour of course.

Hi DaveFife,

Automatic transmission faults need careful diagnosis. If the AA man turns out to be correct, just replace the converter not the whole transmission. It's a huge risk buying a second-hand transmission from a scrapyard; always get a properly reconditioned unit with a guarantee from a specialist or, better still in my view, have yours repaired.

David3807 speaks wise words.

Simon.

DON'T go by what other peeps say. Listen to opinions by all means, make a list of possibilities, then proceed in an orderly fashion down your list. The Oil level is the first thing to check. then look at the elec connections...

Always start by checking the simple, cheap items first, swapping gear boxes should be the last thing you consider.

Auto Gear box faults are usually accompanied by EP being displayed on the dash where it normally shows what gear you are in..

Thanks a lot Gents for all your very helpful responses.

I will print this thread and take it to show Tom at the garage I use.

Interesting about the auto transmission fluid level indicator, the AA guy did not know how to check this but I assume the man at the garage does. Also that smell of burning transmission fluid was definately present when the car lost all drive.

The car went for a basic £40 service about a month ago, I don't think they touched the transmission fluid at this time but I will check. Whilst I'm on the subject can someone please tell me the part number or something for the correct fluid so that if I should find a suitable donor I know I have the correct fluid in it as reading through a few posts this seems to be important.

Once again Gents, thanks for your input, it is greatly appreciated and I hope to meet you all at a meet soon.

Sorry to be a pain but have just remembered something I read earlier whilst reading through posts about other poor peoples whoos with their autoboxes.

As I understand it the ECU for the autobox is in the same compartment as the fusebox. When I recently got the car back the fusebox cover was off so the garage had obviously been in there to fix previous probs.

Could it be possible that the ECU had taken a knock which over 50 miles of driving might have slowly worked an electrical connector/connection loose???

Just a thought!
