Default temperture gauge gone crazy ???

i have been running my temperture gauge from the onboard OBD, today after only 6 miles driving the temp dial dropped to the blue and i had a reading of .........-128 with fan kicking in. im hoping its just gremlings at work and a battery disconnect for 30 minutes. any advice will be welcome.
regards
Billy

Could be engine coolant temp sensor or the wiring thereto playing up. Check the wiring first, maybe just a loose connection.

Fan always goes full speed if no signal received from the temp sensor.

the temperature sensor could be at fault, this is mounted to the right of the top hose to the engine.check it against a known good one.

thread moved to the technical forum for better exposure
