Default Airbag Warning light

The airbag warning light keeps intermitently coming on and off on my beloved MG ZT.
The car has only done 22,000 miles and only 3000 in the last 5 years. Is this a common problem? The car does about 5miles a week tops, sometimes the warning light is on, and sometimes fine. Anybody know if this would be an MOT failure and should I even bother to take it to my local garage as it doesn't affect me driving it.

Normally due to the connectors under the front seats.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page where you will find similar threads that explain in greater detail the possible fix

Usually its the connector under the Drivers front seat..

I had this when first got the ZT, I cured mine by pulling the fixed connector part off leaving it as floating joint & spraying it with switch cleaner. you might get away with just unplugging/plugging it a few times to clean the joint.

Its not just our cars, loads of other have the similar probs, even BMW's ( with use the same plug ) on many models.

Default Under Seat

Hi

Yip, I had this and as others have said, it was the connector under drivers seat. Quick clean, job done.

Hi, Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but under the new MOT 2012 regs that will be introduced in January the warning lights form part of the test.

I quote from the new rules:

Reason for Rejection
1.
An airbag obviously missing or defective.
Note: A passenger airbag that has been switched off is not a Reason for Rejection.
2.
A Supplementary Restraint System (SRS) malfunction indicator lamp:

inoperative

indicating a system malfunction.

Depending on when your car is due for its next test it may be a good idea to present for the test early ie during December, which would give you a full year to fix the problem.

Maybe you misunderstood me.

It will pass under current regs - but it will not pass next year.

There are approx 20 new items for the testers to check.

I think it will matter when it fails the MOT.

If it isn't the connectors under the seat, check your plenums, as water can get in and under the carpet getting the side impact sensors wet.

This is what happened to my saloon, the grommet for the clutch master cylinder wasn't correctly fitted and water was coming in and under the carpet and it was the driver's impact sensor that was causing my light.

On the passenger side if there is water in the plenum chamber then it can in by the cabin filter and get under your carpet on that side.

Am sure it will be the under seat connectors though, they cause many an owner a problem, including me on my new tourer. It's the passenger seat one on that.

Just quickly looked under the drivers seat and there are two yellow connectors that look in fairly good condition and together, but does anybody know what the black connector that is unhooked to anything else is for?
It's a little black unit (female) portion, about 3/4 of an inch square?
Anyway still got the intermitent airbag warning light coming on and off.
Don't think it will be the plenums as previously mentioned by somebody as the garage is dry stored. Thanks all.
