Changing from the three speed to the two speed requires the splicing together of the slow and medium feeds so both operate the slower speed on the two speed fan. Put simply, your slow, medium and fast requirements become medium, medium and fast. There is a how to somewhere on here.
Good luck Dave...

If you CAN see the silver resitor you have a TWO speed fan and it is more than likely the resistor has failed. I believe if you bypass the resistor the fan will work on max speed. This would then prove the resistor has failed. You need a gold one from Jules as they are more robust. YOU HAVE A TWO SPEED FAN CHRISTOPHER

Yep,
My understanding is the standard 1.8 Mk1 has a 2 speed 3 wire fan motor which is quite different to the 4 wire 3 speed units in all other Mk1 models (the 1.8 turbo has a different one to all the others too) |

Prob correct that Phil, very early ones had no resistor (not a clue how they worked) but the latter type def two speed with the silver feeble resistor. Good shout Phil. (now i know why your green)
Edit: one thing for certain that resistor is prime suspect

Thanks Guys - so I have a 2 speed fan! (Is it any different from the "new" fans though?)
I'll see if there are any fuses to check too - you never know ... edit: also, might invest in a resistor from Jules anyway .... you never know (twice)

Reading the resistor mod thread - it seems to me that the resistor is for the lower of the two speeds, so if the resistor has gone the fan should cycle in and out of high speed - which in my case it isn't ... so although the resistor *may* be gone it points at something else - the fan itself, or something further up the chain.
Does that make sense?
