Sorry for the short reply, I was pushed for time but wanted to post an answer.

A backup of the disc onto CDR also works. Having looked at the files, they seem to be in a completely different format to the other NavTeq software I have (bundled with a GPS unit some time ago). I had hoped to find a way to update the map files/POI etc manually but perhaps this isn't possible.
