Old Camcorder tapes

I have several old camcorder tapes that were taped on using a sony handycam in 1990 this has now been replaced with a new model camcorder not digital, when I play the tapes in the new camcorder the videos are slightly faster and sound like chipmunks very funny but need to know is there any way I can copy them and slow down to normal speed any help would be great, the belt on the now old kaput camcorder was I think slipping causing it to record slower

First thought would be to try and record them to your PC and or CD
It might work.

I assume as it's a Sony camcorder that the format they are on is Video 8?

Did the original machine have long play? If so they may been recorded in it, and your new machine may be trying to play them back in SP.

Check to see if your new camcorder has LP mode and try that.

Thanks for the replies I have managed to copy them to a lg recorder hard drive which can then be tranfered to a dvd or cd on the same machine which then I could probably move onto my laptop, is there software that could slow the play down and be recorded into normal speed, also the camcorder automatically detects which speed it has been recorded in either long or short play just wondered if anyone else has had this problem and how they sorted it out any help would be great. Bill

Hum, in my experience, if you are playing back a recording at a different speed to that which it was recorded, you usually get all sorts of sync issues which show up as picture noise and frame rolling. While there may be software out there that can reduce the speed of playback (my computer has the professional editing software by Avid which will do this) it wouldn't help to clean up any time base issues to picture stability.

I must assume your transfers have gone across totally stable and clean albeit at the wrong speed? Not sure what else to suggest really, it's a pity your original camcorder can't be used to play them back as whatever tape speed problem they would have been recorded with on the unit would be replicated on playback, giving a correct speed image.

I will try to get hold of that software programme called Avid and see what happens, everything just copied over like for like no problem there on a hard drive recorder, just need to copy to disc now and run through my laptop then I can play around and try to resolve the speed issue thanks to all for the advice anyway Bill.

Hello Reebs I may have sussed it out the new camcorder that I have got, it only plays in short play mode

the original plays in both short and long play which it detects when you put the tape in, now all I need to to is sort out the old camcorder and get it fixed or get a second hand one and then copy over to dvd the camcorder cost over 700 pounds back in 1999 so was quite expensive at the time,it was only after moving house I came across my camcorders and tapes so now I am on a mission to get the old memories back, thanks everyone for the help and advice Bill.

You should try and capture that footage.Then from your laptop you can try and fix it to play correctly.

Else get a second hand camcorder so that it'll play correctly and try and capture that.

There is all sorts of video editing software out and about, Avid, Final Cut and Adobe Premiere Pro are the industry standard, but there are simpler ones too. There was an open source one for Linux, not sure it had a Windows or OS X version. I use Adobe Premiere.

I still have a VHS-C camcorder and also a MiniDV one.
