Fear not chaps. Your email addresses are probably on thousands of illegal data collection servers around the world.
At least the likes of Halfords are asking you for it and not buying it off an offshore data mining company. |

They've got mine anyway as I've a trade card. Any junk mail just gets filtered out by my email account.

Comet used to do the same. I used to give them the post code of the store I was in and believe it or not 100% of the time they entered the post code of the store where I was!

I used to get so angry with all the junk mail coming in, so for a time I used to post them back (minus any personal information) but I would mix it all up so the company would get junk mail from other companies. Now everything just goes into the shredder |

They are all at it, email lists of folk with debit cards are worth a lot of money these days..
Had it an Asda one Xmas, I bought a TV for one of my kids, the woman on the till says..you must take your receipt to the customer service desk and tell them your name address for the guarantee. Yeah right, so they can send your info to TV licencing, I said I'm not doing that and if it goes wrong you will get it straight back.. |

To be honest it's quite handy for some things having an email receipt,
I had to return a security light to screwfix as it was faulty, Showed them email receipt with order details and was back out the shop within 5 mins with a replacement. I have a trade card so halfords have my email details but don't find that they bombard me with emails. You could of coarse just give them a total made up email address as long as the last bit is hotmail, gmail, sky, yahoo etc .co .uk I doubt they would question it.

It was a legal requirement to take address info when selling a tv until fairly recently. The company i work for does take Email addresses as mentioned but we do have a specific explanation we give to our acustomers as to why we take it and what we do with it and more to the point how they can get us to remove any data we hold on them... There are some definate advantages with us having their email so it is rare that our customers do not wish to take advantage of it and at least they have all the info to make a fully informed decision. Oh and we never sell that info onwards either!

I have a ''junk'' Email account for such things. It is useful when you need one but don't want to get bombarded with all the rubbish you know will follow.
I opened it the other day at to my surprise it had 4000 + junk Emails. |

I too use general purpose email accounts that I can throw away should the need arise but I guard them all with the same level of care as I do my personal email. I don't suffer from junk mail at all and it's only once in a blue moon that a phishing mail from "my bank" that's almost impossible to guard against will show up.
