Thinking of Buying 75 diesel!

Dear all
I am thinking of buying a 75 Diesel Auto conny on an 06 plate. Current mileage is 90000 - it is a lovely clean car with a FSH..
But is their any major things I should be looking out for?

Any help or advice would be most welcome

All you need to know HERE, but two concerns I would have about an 06 as opposed to an 05 or older, would be corrosion and the major one tax. An 06 car would suggest it had been lying around a while somewhere (likely an airfield in the open) whilst the administrators of MGR sorted them all out. Also being an 06, I believe that it could fall into the higher tax bracket. I think it changed in April of that year from £300 (currently) to £500+ per year (I may be wrong on this, but I would check it anyway just in case). If it was originally registered in NI, it could be an older registered car reregistered on the newer plate, but I would imagine this would be a very rare occurrence, but if it was, it would be liable for a lower tax rate.

Everything is fixable on them. At this age, I would be looking at the rear sills, and the rear suspension, especially the springs and arms. There are plenty out there, so dont be afraid to walk away for another, if you get a bad feeling about it.

Its not additional tax, thats only for petrols, diesels same price for 06/56/07/57/08 registrations Rover 75 on diesels

Agreed the Miles per gallon from a auto diesel to a manual diesel is quite large

Manual 48 MPG
Auto 42 MPG

Auto diesel with a 160 remap is a cracking car

At 90,000 it should be good for another 150,000 or so without much expenditure.

The service schedule of the auto box is a fluid change every 60,000 so at 90,000 Id either make sure there was a receipt for it or do it at the nearest convenient opportunity.

MPG wise, I get 500 miles per tank, thats on one short hop up the M6 with the rest on A and B roads and also some back lanes. So not too bad, better than our Jag X-Type Diesel Auto.

Autos are nicer than manuals, as these seem heavy on the clutch pedal to me. bit of a mither in traffic. Also, with a manual, you are always at some point heading towards a hefty bill with the clutch.

Wouldn't worry too much about a 16 year old car being stood for some time in an Airfield when new? Like any old car, its where its been stood for the other 15 years since then that matters surely?

I like the 75 and ZT auto's Had my last ZT Diesel auto for 9 years and clocked up 215,000 with no major issues. It never broke down on me and the box was always fine.

Just apply the usual upgrades when you purchase it.
Dummy EGR,
Clean inlet manifold and MAP sensor
New Inter-cooler O rings
Silicon Inter-cooler hoses
Thermostat, ensure it reads half way
Put a quality injection cleaner through it Archoil D Max.
Fan resistor.
Good full service

Should drive nice (or as good as it ever will) after these checks etc and prove reliable.

It certainly is, sluggish it is not !! Bless the day a great friend uprated my diesel to 160.

Provided it's not a horrible old rot box, mileage is not always the deciding factor these days
