Default Advice on todays 1.0L to 1.8L engines

30 years ago going on the motorway in a car with a 1.0L engine trying to do 70mph was hard work. Perhaps even 1.6 was no easy ride but cars and engines are so much better now.

Wife is thinking of getting a 2nd hand Honda Civic, Ford Focus or Ford Fiesta. Petrol engines range from 1.0L to 1.8L. Not looking for a sporty model or a diesel but one with bells and whistles, we keep our cars until they are "worthless"

1.8 perhaps a tad more then she needs as generally this will be a town car.
Never know she may want to drive to Mansfield which is about 200 miles.

With 4 adults and a full boot what are your thoughts on these cars and small engines? 1.6 onwards more then capable of the journey, below 1.6 I start to think the engine is being over worked and so your advice would be appreciated.

no more then 5 or 6 years old more like 3-4 I think, my budget 3-4k, her budget 10k

I find the 1 litre 12 valve engine in my C1 perfectly adequate for the car. You need to work the gears a bit more if doing a longer run say on A roads with steep hills but the C1 is still more than capable of keeping up with other traffic.

It is certainly no replacement for a 75, ZT or ZT-T but I did bot buy my C1 for that purpose. For commuting and going into town and the occasional longer run it is ideal as it is very economical, cheap to run witb no road tax payable and cheap insurance.

My wifes Dacia Sandero Stepway has a 0.9 litre turbo charged Renault engine fitted which is even more capable than the engine in my C1, but having a heavier bodyshell and more kit built into the car the economy suffers.

My C1 is capable of 65 to 70 mpg which I have been able to achieve, Kirstys Dacia Sandero Stepway, it os a struggle to achoeve 50 mpg on a similar journery.

Just drove through France to Northern Spain and back in a 2 year old Skoda Yeti 1.2 petrol Auto. Driver, Co-Driver and the back fully loaded with holiday kit. A distance over 2000 miles. We drove up to over 1400 metres altitude up winding and hairpinned mountain roads. Including; across the Millau viaduct then down to Millau itself - and back out next morning, up the non-toll road to pass into Spain - through the Ardeche Gorge and then up to the Source of the Loire. Never felt like it was really struggling - except the auto box which needed a bit of taking in hand during my driving stints - but then I hate Auto's anyway. And don't get my going on the engine stop start when stationery - that was the worst thing - taking an extra second to pull out at junctions and roundabouts requires a little clairvoyance to make it smooth...

Mrs Teflon got a new Hyundai i20 a year or so ago. I was more than a little concerned prior to the test drive as it only has a .9 ltr 3 cylinder engine . Needn't have worried though, it's a little belter.

It's quite at home on long motorway journeys, happily keeping pace with the traffic and is a joy to drive around town. Car engines really do seem to have come on leaps and bounds in the last few years.

PSA's 1.2 3 cylinder is very capable and has up to 130 bhp. Fiat's old 1.2 / 1.4 FIRE engine is around 75 to 100 bhp I think and very strong. Brother had a Grande Punto and it never missed a beat in 45K miles. As it was a company car he didn't get a service done. Still ran sweet as.

Turbocharging is your friend.

30 years ago we were playing with the engines from Japanese microcars. They were around 100 bhp per litre then. I cant recall them all, I think one was a diahatsu charade 3 pot. Fantastic things.

I guess that they have needed the alleged demise of Diseasal and increasing emissions tax to make such small displacement motors acceptable to the public.

My son has a 5 door 2014 Fiesta Titanium Ecoboost. It has a 1.0L three cylinder engine with 123bhp that can do 0-60mph in 9.4 seconds and it averages over 60mpg - road tax is £0! Not sure what it would be like to drive loaded with 4 adults and a full boot, but with just two in it cruises comfortably at speeds I shan't mention. It's not a bad looking thing either.

Fiesta 1.0l eco boost gets a thumbs up from me. My dad has one and has been remapped to 160bhp. Has run quarter mile at santa pod 15.2 seconds! Will reach 60mph in less than 7 seconds. Motorways are a breeze for it too, it pulls away from my 1.8t easily.

My wife's daily drive is a new Skoda Fabia 1.0 turbo. On the rare occasions I get to drive it I can't believe how well it goes , great performance through the whole range of driving and has a roughty engine note as well. Cracking car, so far away in performance from my old 950cc mk1 Fiesta
