Why Answer The Phone?
It just happened again, so, why do people answer the phone with a "sorry, can't talk, we're just going out!" Why answer the phone in the first place? (yes, it annoys me)

I think some people feel an obligation to it. Easy to become a slave to it, must be answered and quickly, drop everything and get to the phone.

Courtesy, plus answering it and saying that is quicker than letting it ring out.

Also saves the caller the effort of potentially ringing multiple times before catching them.

My Dad feels bad if he doesn't answer. When he's been up to visit us for a weekend, he'll often moan someone won't stop texting him, so I say to just stop replying, they'll just think he's busy, but he feels bad so continues to answer every time!
