Default Used Jaguar XF buying advice sought

Hi,

I'd like to buy a used Jaguar and my budget is up to £6.5k. My criteria is:

* I'd like something with under 80k miles
* Nice colour, I like red and white, something noticeable. I'm not a fan of silver.
* I prefer manual but know most XF's are autos
* I'd like a diesel
* I'd like the best possible spec possible. I know there are LWB models although these are rare and this is maybe asking too much for my budget!

If anyone comes across something that looks good, I'd appreciate any leads.

Cheers,
Jim

I have been looking for an XF like you, but for many months! I have concluded that there are very few under 100k miles, no manuals, and that the 2.7 diesels are not the best (look at how many late S types with that engine are sold for spares or repair). I have to say that at your budget you will have to be patient, but good luck!

There is a very nice one for 4k in Coventry. Black and looks clean and tidy. It's done over 100k but then it is a 59 plate. Hearsall Motors. I'll try getting a link.

A colleague bought one recently. 66 plate in dark blue. Only £30 per year tax and its a 2 litre diesel producing 180bhp I think.
He's very pleased with it. A big upgrade from his Hyundi i30.

A workmate had one a couple of years ago and after several visits to Jaguar specialist trying to fix various issues with EGR, random warning lights with no apparent reasons and the final straw was when it left him stranded on the hard shoulder. It was collected by the RAC and of course it started once at the garage so he sold it.

Apparently a great mile muncher, good on fuel but a lot of stuff needs Jaguar specialist to fix.

Saying that I would like a Supercharged V8 but the repair bills scare me off.

I have just sold a high mileage XF Diesel so here are a few comments from my own experiences. The car had done 160k, honestly you’d not have known it! Interior trim had all worn very well.

I had a 3.0 Diesel, definitely a better than a 2.7, mine was the 240bhp model not the 275bhp ‘S’ model. To be honest the 240 model was rapid and certainly you’ll appreciate it if you’ve come from a 75 diesel!

I went for a car with good history, the Cambelts on them are an expensive change but well worth doing. Equally check that the engine has been run on good oil not just on the cheapest 10w40 that Halfords have.

As far as I am aware all XF’s are Automatics and also the LWB you speak of was a China only model.

I would certainly go for it though! They are lovely cars and a nice heir to a 75.

for your budget, you will most probably only be able to get a Premium Luxury 3.0d Variant, and would be around the 2010/11 year. They never did a Manual Model, as they were all ZF 6 speed models, and newer one's, 2012 onwards had the ZF 8 Speed. However, all model have paddle shift, but the ZF gearbox is very smooth, and I never had a problem with my previous or current one.

If at 100,000 miles, then the belts will need to be done, and it costs around £350 at a local specialist to have belts done, but will be extra if you have water pump and tensioners, expect around £600 (not to different to a 75/ZT V6).

and has been previously mentioned, they did not do a LWB for UK, you would need to be looking at an XJ if you wanted a LWB

This might be worth a look at:

Hope that helps and good luck in your search

Manual is only in 2nd gen 4 cyl diesel so unlikely to be old enough to be within your budget, but hope you find something you like.

Thanks everyone. This is amazingly helpful. Your guidance is appreciated. I've always tried to get the top model (623GSI, Connie SE, X type sovereign) so low 2nd hand luxury cars with all the toys for the money. The good news is I have my 75 which was a weekend car that is now pressed in to daily low mileage use. It has a years MOT so I can bide my time and wait until the right car comes along.
