Default MOT Failure …..Yet again

MOT Failure …..Yet again
The tourer has failed again! what a surprise.
Repair immediately (major defects)
- Offside front power steering pipe / hose leaking (2.1.5(a))
- Central rear engine mount damaged or deteriorated resulting in excessive movement (6.1.8(a)(i))
Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories)
-Front oil leak, nut not excessive (8.4.1 (a)(i))

I do a lot of my repairs, but this tourer has nearly 250k miles on and everything is blathered down there. I’m getting sick to death of this car every year is fails.
Is it worth it I keep asking myself?
This might be the end of the road this time.

It will be the power steering pipe that’s covering everything, repair it and get the gunk out.

So on picking the car up we asked what pipe was it and where’s it leaking.

His response was he didn’t know.

Probably because everything is covered in power steering fluid & possibly because he didn't look too hard.

Best thing to do is get some cleaner in there & cleanup as best possible, then run the car.
You'll soon see where the fluid is coming from.

I thought my steering hose was leaking, as it was absolutely COVERED in oil and dirt.
Turned out to be a long-term leak from the central gasket of the power steering pump, a VERY COMMON fault, according to a company that reconditions the pumps.
IF you haven't had the gasket replaced ever, it WILL be leaking from there.
I obtained a replacement gasket, and happy days.
And Corteco lower engine mounts are available for a reasonable price on eBay.

Find a local car cleaning place, and get the engine bay cleaned.

I am very pleased that I got these two problems out of the way, so I can get back to insanely smiling when I get into the driver's seat.

I thought it was going to be something horrible, but with only a little expenditure you will be out there in your dream machine again soon.

In my experience you are better off repairing what you have than buy another with unknown problems as long as the repairs are cost effective.

I hear so many times that someone is going to buy another car to save repairing what they have or because it is more economical. In most cases they are just buying more problems even if they spend a lot of money or the marginal saving in fuel rarely justifies the extra expense.

Most newish cars depreciate at least £50 a week, I suspect even if the repairs on your car come to more than you are expecting it will be cheaper than the £2500 you will spend on the depreciation on a newish car or the probably unknow repairs on another car.

Most people sell a car for a reason and its not because they have got bored with it. Many faults can be hidden by removing warning lights or doing a bodge. I always take a fault scanner when I look at another car for me or friends who want a second opinion, if they are not happy with me plugging a scanner in they probably have something to hide.
