Default Secrets of the blue connector revealed

In the continuing search to resolve the air-bag light problem, I replaced one of the blue connectors with a pair of bullet connectors.
I then thought I would take the connector apart to see where the problems lay.

To my mind,it's a very intricate design involving precision injection mouldings and tricky assembly.
The pink bit at the end is a locking device; there was one at the other end but I couldn't work out how to remove it so I had to drill it out.
The forked piece, although appearing gold plated does not make any electrical contact, it just appears to be a locating device.
These must have been made specially for MGR with the correct colour wires pre-installed. The pins appear to be gold plated as do the interiors of the sockets although you need a good magnifying glass to spot this.

The female connectors themselves appear to be a miracle of modern miniaturisation as the "shoe" which carries the wire actually fits into the outer casing which has a sprung retaining clip with the square end folded over to leave an aperture which just fits the square pins( 0.6mm).
How do they do that?

You have to wonder why they're so unreliable?
From what I've seen, they don't provide enough positive contact between each half. A bullet connector is miles better.
