Not BMW engine , and fuel economy depends on how you drive..

Fantastic if you get a good one and an absolute money pit, if you buy a bad one!

However if you're worried about fuel consumption, you're looking at the wrong car, as a 2.5 petrol auto, is never going to be an economical car!

The 2.5 auto is my favourite variant of 75, and lovely to drive, if a decent example. They're very smooth, perform well, and the character of the engine suits a 75 perfectly. Economy-wise, it very much depends on how you drive it. If you're gentle on it, you'll get 32 or so on a run, and if you're sore on it, you'll get 17 or 18 mpg.

Or if you aren't worried about getting a puncture get a V6 with LPG - diesel running costs with V6 petrol performance (I'm told - haven't taken the plunge myself). But I love my 2.5V6 in every way - sound, acceleration, smooth as butter, reliaibility.....

I'm pleased to say it's not a BMW engine but a Rover KV6, people think Rover engines are costly to maintain but it's nothing compared to the cost of maintaining a BMW (petrol) one.
As for fuel economy, considering the size of the car I think it's very creditable.
Motorway cruising I get 31 mpg, a five minute trip to shops, 18 mpg but overall about 25 mpg.
Incidentally, my 2.5 uses no more fuel than my previous 2.0 but I think that's because you have to work the 2.0 harder.
Both cars had auto boxes so those are the figures I'm quoting.

We run both a 2.0 litre diesel automatic and a 2.5 litre petrol automatic.
Driving locally (25 mile) the diesel regularly returns 38mpg but the V6 struggles at 25 mpg.
On a decent run they're both very much better with the diesel returning closer to the 50mpg mark and just a few weeks ago I recorded 37mpg with the V6.

It's all down to driving style and of course traffic volume.

Yep, Very similar figures here. Up to 35/36 on a long run light motorway traffic with cruise set at possibly maybe just a bit higher than it should be, dropping to low twenties with stops start weekly stuff. General average of mixed driving around 27mpg ish.

I wonder if people are getting confused with the V6 being economical VS the cost to fill up. I think the economy of the V6 is great given what my expectations are from it. Is it possible that the crippling price of fuel in the UK (and it is getting worse here too) and hence the cost to fill the tank taints one's view of what economical is? Is that put back into perspective after running a V8?
