I recall in the aftermath of MGR’s demise there were various prototypes running different outsourced diesel engines to replace the by then aging Beemer units. Seem to think they were trying engines from Fiat/GM and VEM (?) and the prototypes were offered for sale at auction. Are they still around? The story i recall is when Pheonix signed the deal with BMW they did not include a condition that gave access to BMW’s engine upgrades - apparantly the Pheonix 4 didn’t believe Diesel would be in demand....

I did have a load of factory correspondence concerning trials of Isuzu units. FIAT-engined examples were abandoned in the US when the company went to the wall.

I think they where considering the Fiat JTD engine. I once saw a 75 diesel with one fitted, up in a north east Wales Rover Specialist. (somewhere near Deeside if memory serves me correctly)
