Me and Mr. crowbar will take on this tomorrow.... keep you posted It does make sence that it is not retained in anyway, hence the need for the bracket. Quote:
I was also thinking along the lines of loctite, I am just a bit concerned at the hand tight nature of original tightening and that the threads are notup to anything when I put the rack back on. As the sub frame is cooming off, I think I might tap the threads larger and upgrade the bolts to match. Thanks for your input Last edited by Dragrad; 20th September 2014 at 00:19.. I can now confirm that both sides of the diff tap off a 10 cm or so spline on an automatic gearbox, small note to self, empty the box of ATF before you lever these bad boys out! Very very close to dropping out the subframe. standby for next instalment............ |

Sub frame off, not much left of the front end, hope bolting the new auto gearbox in will be as much fun as getting to the old one.................. |

Look on the bright side Simon, at least with it being an auto you don't have to worry about aligning the clutch.

A whole weekend of grunting and groaning AND finally its completed.... Not without its dramas along the way, like cracking the housing on the new gearbox whilst putting it in! AND transplanting the old housing, which was properly nerve racking. Anyway all done smooth as silk we have renamed the rover as The phoenix due to it rising from the ashes twice in one weekend. Just a thought I am going to rip apart the old gearbox, just for kicks, saving the solenoids along the way I want to eye ball this reverse piston up close, when I took off the old gearbox, there where shreads and lumps of metal all over it, so clearly a major fail has taken place. It goes without saying that the car was worth it, I would go through it again BUT hope I never have too. |

I know its an old thread but thought id add some interesting info re the reverse piston issue mentioned, I had a similar issue some time back, car was crashing into each gear (faulty solenoid) and when at the auto specialists they mentioned a few things, the solenoids can be changed with the box in the car (remove a side panel on the box ?) and Jatco have a modified reverse piston as a spare part replacement for these boxes and I think that can also be replaced without the box being removed.
I was led to believe that the reverse piston issue was only on earlier cars, pre 2001 and was sorted out after that time. |

Did the replacement box work OK when it was finally fitted?

Nein, das gibt's doch gar nicht!
Normally you fill a box until it starts flowing from the overflow. I replaced the fluid in the 1.8T, and it was not a problem at all. But I can't remember the details. I followed what is written in Haynes. I remember people talking about a bolt that you are not supposed to loosen, which apparently can be mistaken for the drain plug. Could you have made that mistake? |

9 years after the final (incomplete) update by the OP, and 6 years after the last person wondered how it had all ended, I read this from start to finish with considerable interest. Then I turned the last page to find...... someone had torn it out!!
Oh well.
