If I remember correctly there is a vent pipe for the fuel tank in there. Repaired the conduit on Mrs Noc's car using an old bit of exhaust pipe cut into two halves and clamped together over the rusted out section.

Having had no knowledge of a charcoal canister, and having now acquainted myself with it, I can say with some new-found authority (the forum ) that only petrol models have one. Every day's a school day.

I'd also thought of a split pipe - probably plastic - as a repair but using two halves is probably a better solution. I happen to have a length of exhaust pipe so will mull it over whilst finishing the parking sensors job.

Great info, thanks. I'll strip out the wheel arch liner and deal accordingly.

Thanks for all the input. Forum to the rescue as always.

Having looked at all the photo's, am I right in thinking there is a large gaping hole in the wheel arch which allows quite a large amount of water to run down it?

Yes! The end of this tube exits into the wheel arch, I always fill mine with dinitrol or ACF50 then seal the end with silicone to stop the water ingress.

Thanks!

What a strange idea! So I presume this pipe is open at the other end too. Can water get in there and cause problems?

Unlikely as it sits high above the fuel tank, ive never seen one rot at that end.

Yes, I've had a look at those too. It looks like there is a huge hole, in a very bad place, that let's water into a metal tube, that has it's lowest point on the bottom corner with nowhere for it to escape. What a dumb idea!

But there again, it seems to last for the normal lifespan of the car. I've seen a lot of other car brands that are just full of visible rust at half the age of my Rover. Can't even imagine how badly they are rusted in the hidden area's.
