no cos people when nicked, will plead that they thought they were driving an electric vehicle

Some years ago during some fuel emergency I remember speed limits on Motorways were reduced to 50mph, perhaps it was an advisory?? but it seemed to have some effect, personally it reduced my mileage costs. I am making sure I drive slightly below urban limits and will adjust my motorway driving speed. Maybe not for everyone but my choice at fuel at 169p on the V6 it make sense. Chris.S.

At the rate the volume of traffic is increasing on UK roads we will be lucky to find anywhere we can get up to 50mph

Can you imagine the logistics nightmare for all the trucking companies who will need to reschedule all their delivery times.

And the business who operate a "just in time" system of deliveries with tight time slots.

It'll be interesting to see how this unfolds.

Lots of brouhaha about it on one HGV forum.

It's going to be open season with owt with a tailpipe in the coming years as local authorities up & down the country look to fill their coffers with this pollution tax.

ZEZ in Oxford Really!!! yet you can still enter & pay if you have an ICE car. Nothing but a cash cow for the councils.

I wonder how they will enforce it with foreign lorries, I came down the M1 a couple of weeks ago through the 50MPH 20 mile long roadworks and all the foreign lorries were still doing their 60MPH .
They kept triggering the speed cameras but ploughed on regardless. I have a feeling that maybe we do not send speeding enforcement fines abroad?

The reason so many didn't come back when there was a lorry driver shortage & the government were handing out visa's to EU drivers was because of HMRC tax irregularities & non payments of motoring Offence fines. A lot of the eastern European drivers were quite open about it at the time.

Most continental lorries are now limited to 56mph though that wasn't always the case. The cameras are set at the ACPO guidelines of 10%+2 so travelling at an average of 55mph is unlikely to result in an NTO. To the driver of a car doing an indicated 50mph, this is liable to be 45-47mph so a lorry doing 55 may appear to be doing 60 but is generally unlikely to be doing so.

I agree speed limits should be reduced but not only for conservation of energy reasons but conservation of life.
There’s far too much emphasis placed on the top speed a car can do.
Last week a friend was telling me he was taking delivery of his new Tesla and all he could talk about was how fast to 60 it could do.
Cars need to slow down especially in town to preserve life.

My old motto is “it’s best to arrive alive”
