Shock absorbers?
Hi everyone.
This is my first post after many hours reading this top forum. Got a 2002 2.0 75 last week with only 75000 miles on it. Apart from the "normal" rattle from the inlet manifold, I've found today a new problem. Car went for a basic check (oil, filters, plugs, etc), and when collected, rear suspension was completely wrong, jumping at every small pothole like crazy. The thing is that nothing has been touched at the rear suspension. It has been jacked up on the elevator to chek thge underside, but nothin touched. Only change was that tyres were over inflated at 2,5bar both ends, insted of 2,1 front and 1,9 rear (sorry, don't know equivalence to UK units). After a shorty drive test, the car was a total mess. I've corrected tyre pressures, but still the same. I believe shocks are gone, but can't understand such a sudden change. Is it possible that running those high pressurers may have accelerate the death of some already old shocks to that point? Is it possible that after having the wheels hanging on the elevator, something settled down in the wrong possition? It's a shame because the car was running ultra smooth untill then. No problem understanding. If the car was fine before it went into the workshop then go back to the same garage and explain how the car handles.
Slightly over-inflated tyres wouldn't produce the symptoms you describe, I run my 75 on 2.2 front & back. The rear shock absorbers do have a large effect on stability, but again if the car was fine before the work, go back and talk to them. Regards |

I did came back to the garage, and the mechanic (a very trusty one for many years), was as surprised as me as he said nothing has been touched around rear suspension. It's still a mystery... Regards |

I suppose the car lift (elevator) extending the rear shock absorbers could have some effect on the old ones as they would have been extended more than normal. If they were old there’s only alternative - replace them. My daughter bought a car with poor shock absorbers last year and at speed the car was very unstable, we changed the shocks (one had zero resistance) and the car was transformed.

That's what I think as well. 75000mls are more than enough for such a heavy car, as I supose shocks are original fitting. Ready to order a pair now... Regards |

Shock absorber problems
I would be having the mechanic take the rear shocks 9ff and check them. Sounds like one has locked up. Not uncommon and makes the car ride horribly.

As well as the shocks (push down on the corners and check the rebound - if it bounces more than 1.5 times, they are well past it), check the springs. Especially inside the spring cups. They are known to break and not be noticed for years (my own passed at least 4 annual tests). Lifting the car could have disturbed them.

As suposed, rear right shock was dead.
Everything else looks ok. Normal ride restored. Thanks |
