Default Maf

Thinking it’s about time I sorted my MAF needs a new one I think
Don’t want to NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD- about with a patten one
If I unplug the suspected dodgy one will the car still run or will it kill it, seem to rember hearing that if it’s unpluged but the engine runs no different then the MAF is knackered
Where’s the best place to get one from
53 plate diesel (auto) if that makes any difference

if you unplug the MAF it should run on a default engine map using the MAP sensor.
May be a little rich and not so good on acceleration...
match exactly the part number on ebay... beware as several units share the same main number... match all the sub numbers too for the correct setup

Dave buy bosch MAF only by cheap buy twice, there is a BMW MAF with the same insert which is a little cheaper, I am sure someone will post the link for it.

Here is the bosch one.

Is that link for the MAF a simple unbolt rebolt exercise, I know you can get “inserts” but with my luck and abilities I know it will end in tears as I throw things about and kick the cat/wife and kids 😂

Any of the suppliers on here sell them for a reasonable price, £100 seems cheap enough as I thought they were about £150 which is why it’s been left for so long 😞

So after having a rear light fall out the car has been off the road for a 3 or so weeks
New(second hand) light fitted and a new anti roll bar link so all’s now fine in that department
Also finally today I’ve just unplugged the MAF and all the jerking has gone so definitely the MAF must be knackered
I’ll get one of these maf’s On the above link and hopefully that will cure that

Edit :-
The link now says item ended so I’ll be looking out for one
Is there a part number I should be looking for or just a rover 75 MAF

You can unplug it with no true ill effects, it'll just run off a default table to replace the MAF sensor readings.

In terms of 'running rich' that's not really the case like it would be with a petrol, diesels power output is pretty much directly related to fuel injected. So if you're cruising at 60 and more fuel is added you accelerate, to counter this you just lift off the pedal some more putting you back to square 1.

Hmm, OK then Steve now explain why a car running with the MAF unplugged will return 4 MPG less that the same car with an in spec MAF sensor operating.

An unplugged MAF sensor will default to a set of values which........

A) Tell the ECM that the inlet air temperature is -40 degrees C

B) At 3000 RPM (off load) tell the ECM that the engine should be fuelling at 900 mg/stroke rather than 620 mg/stroke.

Make no mistake, the MAF is there for a reason, it's not there for show, and if you think about it why didn't Rover delete this item as they did with plush carpets, seat belt bolt covers, and other things to save money.

You are right there is no long term harm in running with the MAF disconnected, however the cost can be measured in increased fuel consumption

I’ve just driven about 120 miles up to Lowestoft and the car has run sweet and smooth
Having a tad of trouble locating the part number, is it stamped on the MAF or has some nice person just happen to know it 😊
