F15 crash in north sea.
Sky news reported it flew round in circles before disappearing from radar.Pilot found dead.Strange it was single crewed,I've never heard of that before.

Very sad, I was hoping for a better outcome. The F15's can come as single or two seaters, this one was a F15C which is a single seater. Surprised it took so long to recover the pilot given that he/she was flying in a formation of four and the amount of assets which flooded the area after the event. That area off the North East coast was in the past and might still be a destination for air-to-air refueling, I wonder if that was the purpose for them being there.

Willy, that area is also used for fighter tactics and weapons training with Cobham Aviation providing the electronic simulation systems fitted on modified Falcon 20 biz jets often operating out of Durham airport and RAF Leeming. The RAF and USAF held a big exercise there in May with over a 100 aircraft involved. Interestingly the F16 pilot killed was the squadrons weapons and tactics leader. There's a good article about the training here https://www.aerosociety.com/news/fly...the-dark-side/

As others have said, the F15C is a single seat fighter, not so large for the trained pilots to cope with.
Very sad. Another of the group had a cracked canopy when it landed. |

The aircraft was based out of RAF Lakenheath Suffolk and there is quite a good viewing area off Wangford Road. They fly most weekdays, even at night occasionally, quite impressive I believe. Depending on circumstances they either take off coming towards you or land from behind. When coming towards you they nearly always dip their wings to show us plane spotting sadoes what they are carrying - or not.

F15 details here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McDonn...las_F-15_Eagle Aslo: https://radar.freedar.uk/VirtualRadar/desktop.html shows flight paths of military aircraft, but no F15s. Typhoons, F35s, Apaches out of Wattisham, well more than you can shake a stick at. PS if I could work out how to put up some photos I would. Last edited by Borg Warner; 18th June 2020 at 10:58.. |
